2013 NBA Mock Draft 4.0

Each week I will be giving my opinion on the upcoming NBA Draft.  Keep checking back every week for updates and revisions based on team records and possible trades.

Feel free to ask me a draft question by emailing spooner@923thefan.com.  I will respond to all questions.

Lots of surprises as the draft nears. Many big names are falling like rocks and some are shooting up the board like rockets. Plus I am hearing from my sources around the league that there are as many as 6 teams who won’t be picking in their current position.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers
While I still think there is a good chance the Cavs move this pick, I am hearing 3 names most closely associated with the Cavs. Ben McLemore, Otto Porter and Alex Len. SURPRISE!!!!

Selection – Alex Len, C – University of Maryland

2. Orlando Magic
With Jameer Nelson aging and seemingly injury prone, look for the Magic to shore up their guard play with the best guard in the draft.

Selection – Ben McLemore, SG – University of Kansas

3. Washington Wizards
This couldn’t play out any better for the Wizards. They get to select a player from their own backyard who fills the team’s biggest need.

Selection – Otto Porter, SF – Georgetown University

4. Charlotte Bobcats
The Bobcats will be thrilled here to get the player once viewed as the no doubt, sure fire, consensus #1 overall pick.

Selection – Nerlens Noel, C/PF – University of Kentucky

5. Phoenix Suns
The Suns need help badly at the SG and the SF positions. Phoenix will have no problem pulling a player off the board here who can play both positions, bring athleticism and a defensive toughness the team lacks.

Selection – Victor Oladipo, SG/SF – Indiana University

6. New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans cold use an upgrade over Grevis Vasquez and last year’s second pick Austin Rivers is more of a scorer than facilitator anyway.

Selection – Trey Burke, PG – University of Michigan

7. Sacramento Kings
I’m hearing more and more that DeMarcus Cousins is in the plans of new head coach Michael Malone. This pick allows Cousins to play his natural position of PF.

Selection – Cody Zeller, C – Indiana University

8. Detroit Pistons
The Pistons will be shocked to see both Bennett and Muhammad still on the board. Early on in the draft process it looked like neither player would make it this far.

Selection – Anthony Bennett, SF/PF – UNLV

9. Minnesota Timberwolves
The team could use a shooter and McCollum is rocketing up the draft boards as the draft approaches. Doesn’t hurt that he can play some PG and spell Rubio when needed either.

Selection – CJ McCollum, SG/PG – Lehigh University

10. Portland Trailblazers
Portland could use a shooter as well and with McCollum off the board look for them to select the next best option.

Selection – Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG – University of Georgia

11. Philadelphia 76ers
Here they will find Andrew Bynum’s successor and a player who vaulted himself into the lottery with his impressive performances in Chicago’s Draft Combine.

Selection – Steven Adams, C – University of Pittsburgh

12. Oklahoma City Thunder (from Raptors)
The Thunder have a complete roster with talent at all positions. Here the Thunder could opt for a big to play behind Kendrick Perkins and ultimately replace him.

Selection– Kelly Olynyk, C – Gonzaga University

13. Dallas Mavericks
Lots of options and tough decisions here for the Mavericks. I think they move the pick but if they stay put they would do well to sure up the PG spot.

Selection – Michael Carter-Williams, PG/SG – Syracuse University

14. Utah Jazz
The Jazz once again narrowly miss out on the point guard they covet most in this draft, but in his place they pick up the most intriguing prospect at the position.

Selection –Dennis Schroeder, PG – Germany

15. Milwaukee Bucks
The future of Brandon Jennings will be the dominate subject this off-season in Milwaukee. The uncertainty of said situation means the run on PG’s will continue.

Selection – Shane Larkin, PG – University of Miami

16. Boston Celtics
Paul Pierce may be moved over the summer. Even if he isn’t it’s time to look for his replacement. Once thought of as a top 10 pick, the C’s will do well here to take Muhammad.

Selection – Shabazz Muhammad, SF – UCLA

17. Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks could use another big to go along side Al Horford and replace Josh Smith who is expected to leave this off-season in free agency. Here they get their inside presence.

Selection – Rudy Gobert, C – France

18. Atlanta Hawks (from Rockets)
The Hawks added a big with their earlier pick and now they get a shooter who can also play the SF spot to ease the loss of Josh Smith.

Selection – Tony Snell, SG/SF – University of New Mexico

19. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Lakers via Heat)
The Cavs went big early in the draft and here I am hearing that there is ZERO chance the 19 year old Karasev gets past them on the wing.

Selection – Sergey Karasev, SF – Russia

20. Chicago Bulls
The Bulls could use some size to go along with Noah and here that get one of the most fundamentally sound and underrated big men in the draft. Not exciting or flashy but he will have a long productive career.

Selection – Mason Plumlee, PF/C – Duke University

21. Utah Jazz (from Warriors)
With Al Jefferson and Paul Milsap both schedule to enter FA this off-season the Jazz now must look to add depth to their front court.

Selection – Jeff Withey, C – University of Kansas

22. Brooklyn Nets
The Nets need size to go along with Brook Lopez and new head coach Jason Kidd wants a team that plays good defense and can run… Enter Dieng!

Selection – Gorgui Dieng, C – University of Louisville

23. Indiana Pacers
The Pacers have a lot of talent, and young talent at that. What they don’t have is a great shooter and they can address that need here.

Selection – Allen Crabbe, SG – University of California

24. New York Knicks
The Knicks are one of the older teams in the entire NBA and badly need to add young athletic players to a team of established veterans. The athleticism, pedigree and talent of Tim Hardaway Jr. are a perfect fit for what the Knicks are looking to do going forward.

25. Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers need to make sure the player they select here fits their very unique, up-tempo style of play. Ledo is a good lead guard who has lottery type talent is gaining a lot of momentum as the draft nears.

Selection – Ricky Ledo – PG, Providence College

26. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Grizzlies)
The T-Wolves have the luxury of taking a shot in the dark here this late in the draft. Mitchell has lottery type talent at times but also shows stretches of baffling play. Flip Saunders will hope for the good Mitchell!

Selection – Tony Mitchell, SF/PF – University of North Texas

27. Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets have lots of options and even more flexibility. The team has a very solid and young roster and can add an elite athlete with an improving jump shot and an even bigger upside.

Selection – Jamaal Franklin, SG – San Diego State University

28. San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs rarely miss when going overseas for a draft pick. Ginobli’s career is over and he may take a year or two to develop but Antetokounmpo is the single most intriguing European prospect in the draft and may just be the most talented too.

Selection – Giannis Antetokounmpo, SF – Greece

29. Oklahoma City Thunder
The talent rich Thunder added a quality big earlier in Olnyk. Here they can take a chance on a developmental prospect and stash him for a year or two.

Selection – Livio Jean-Charles, SF – France

GREENSBORO, NC - Reggie Bullock /(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

30. Phoenix Suns (from Heat via Lakers)
Don’t expect the Suns to shy away from shooters or perimeter help just because they added Oladipo earlier. Bullock may not be the most versatile offensively, but he can shoot the basketball and play multiple positions.

Selection – Reggie Bullock, SG/SF – University of North Carolina
